Machu Picchu
The New Wonder of the Modern World
Why Visit Machu Picchu
Built in the 15th century by the Inca Pachacútec, Machu Picchu was abandoned during the Spanish conquest and 'rediscovered' by the Western world in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. Today it is Peru's most recognizable symbol and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, receiving nearly one million visitors per year.
The Inca citadel is divided into two large sectors: the agricultural, with its impressive cultivation terraces, and the urban, with the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (sundial), the Sacred Plaza and the Temple of the Three Windows. The perfect integration of architecture with the surrounding natural landscape remains a mystery for modern archaeologists.
Machu Picchu can be visited as a day trip from Cusco (train to Aguas Calientes + bus to the sanctuary), or as a multi-day destination staying at hotels in Aguas Calientes or at the exclusive Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, the only hotel inside the historic sanctuary. Access via the Inca Trail (4 days of trekking) is the most epic experience for those seeking to arrive as the Inca pilgrims did.
